What is the best credit card for Costco in Quebec?
At a Canadian Costco checkout only Mastercard works, and the "official" CIBC Costco card earns just 1%
inside the warehouse. This page does the net math, with no affiliate links, and the most frequent answer is
not the card Costco sells you at the entrance.

For most Costco members in Quebec, the best card at the checkout is not the CIBC Costco Mastercard: it is
the free Rogers Red World Elite, which earns 2% inside the warehouse with a Rogers, Fido, Shaw or Comwave
postpaid service, against 1% for the official card. The CIBC takes the lead if you have no Rogers service
and your spending leans hard into restaurants (3%) and Costco gas (3% on the first
$5,000).
The Mastercard rule
Why does your Visa not work at the Costco checkout?
Costco Canada has an exclusive deal with Mastercard: in the warehouse and at the gas pump, no Visa or
American Express credit card is accepted, only Mastercard, debit cards and cash. Your 2% Wealthsimple Visa,
excellent everywhere else, stays in your pocket when the cart gets paid. Online is different: Costco.ca
accepts both Visa and Mastercard.
So the real question is: among the Mastercards a Quebecer can actually get for free, which one earns the
most on a real Costco basket? Three serious candidates: the CIBC Costco, the Rogers Red World Elite and,
for the record, the $495 Rogers Legend.

What the math counts, and what it leaves out
Only Mastercard credit cards work at a Canadian Costco checkout and gas pump. Your 2 percent Visa, including the Wealthsimple, stays in your pocket there; Costco.ca online accepts Visa and Mastercard.
CIBC pays its cash back once a year, in January, as a Costco gift certificate you can only spend at Costco. Rogers cash back can be redeemed anytime, including to a bank account.
Costco.ca online spend is not modelled separately; on the CIBC card it earns 2 percent on the first $8,000 a year. The warehouse input here is in-store spend, which earns 1 percent on the CIBC card.
The CIBC card needs an active Costco membership, which you already pay for if you shop there. Elite spend past $61,000 a year is counted at its 1.5 percent base rate, per the August 4, 2026 rules.
The official card
What is the CIBC Costco Mastercard actually worth?
It has real strengths, and they deserve saying: 3% at restaurants, 3% at the Costco pump on the first
$5,000 of gas a year, 2% on Costco.ca on the first $8,000,
no annual fee, and it doubles as your membership card. For someone who eats out often and fills up at
Costco, it is an honestly good card.
Its trap sits at the heart of its promise: inside the warehouse itself, where a member spends the most, it
earns just 1%. And its cash back arrives once a year, in January, as a gift certificate you can only spend
at Costco. That is money that marches you back to the store, not money in your account.
The alternative
Why does the free Rogers Elite win so often?
The Rogers Red World Elite does not care about categories: 2% everywhere with a Rogers, Fido, Shaw or
Comwave postpaid service, 1.5% without, including on the warehouse basket the CIBC pays 1% on. Credit your
cash back to a Rogers bill and the effective rate climbs to 3%, on everything, not just at restaurants.
Double the official card's warehouse rate, cash back redeemable anytime, and $0 in
fees.
Its limits, stated plainly: without a Rogers service it drops to 1.5% and the CIBC can catch it when your
restaurants and Costco gas weigh heavily; its accelerated rate is capped at $61,000
a year from August 4, 2026; and its 2.5% FX fee simply does not matter at Costco. As for the
$495 Legend, the calculator shows it: on a normal Costco basket it finishes behind
both free cards.

The method
How this math is done
The rates, caps and acceptance rules were verified July 10, 2026 against CIBC and Rogers Bank documents and
Costco Canada customer service. The calculator counts cash back and annual fees, nothing else; Costco.ca
online spend is not modelled separately, and the Costco membership's value stays out of the math since you
pay it either way. This is not financial advice; check the terms at the moment you apply.
